Deep groove ball bearing with seals or shields

Single row deep groove ball bearings with seals or shields are particularly versatile, have low friction and are optimized for low noise and low vibration, which enables high rotational speeds. They accommodate radial and axial loads in both directions, are easy to mount, and require less maintenance than many other bearing types. The integral sealing can significantly prolong bearing service life because it keeps lubricant in the bearings and contaminants out.Integral sea

Knowledge and introduction of bearings    :

Seadoo crankshaft bearings are critical components in the engine of a Seadoo personal watercraft (PWC), ensuring the smooth operation and longevity of the engine. Here's a detailed introduction to these bearings:

  1. Types of Crankshaft Bearings:

    • The two primary types of bearings found on a crankshaft are roller bearings and plain bearings, located on the main journals of a crankshaft. Seadoo crankshaft bearings typically fall into these categories, with roller bearings often being pressed onto the crankshaft during assembly.

  2. Functionality:

    • Crankshaft bearings facilitate the rotation of the crankshaft within the engine block. They are designed to handle the heavy loads applied to the bearing surface through the oil film, which includes the firing load from each cylinder's combustion and the inertia load from the rotation of the piston and connecting rod.

  3. Load Capacity:

    • These bearings must be able to carry heavy loads without suffering damage. They consist of a steel backing with a thin lining of bearing alloy, which provides its load-carrying capability.

  4. Lubrication and Surface Properties:

    • Crankshaft bearings are hydrodynamically lubricated, meaning oil is supplied under pressure, and an oil film is generated by the rotation of the crankshaft. This oil film separates the bearing and the crankshaft, allowing them to operate smoothly. The alloys used in the bearings are formulated for good compatibility, minimizing the tendency to weld to the crankshaft in areas of rubbing.

  5. Durability and Resistance:

    • Crankshaft bearing alloys contain a soft, low-melting-point phase which smears over the bearing surface wherever high temperatures are generated, preventing seizure. They also need to be resistant to corrosion and cavitation erosion, as engine oils can degrade over time, becoming acidic and attacking the bearings.

  6. Maintenance and Condition:

    • Dirt entering the bearing clearance with the oil flow can be a source of damage. The bearing material's ability to embed dirt is important; if not embedded properly, it may score the crankshaft, leading to further wear on the bearings. Crankshaft bearings also play a role in "conditioning" the crankshaft, smoothing out any irregularities that could dig into the bearing during operation.

  7. Material and Construction:

    • For severe engine applications, a three-layer construction may be adopted, with a thin layer of a soft, lead-based alloy electrodeposited on top of the bearing lining. This overlay is thin due to the high engine loads it must withstand.

  8. Environmental Considerations:

    • There are ongoing developments aimed at lead-free overlays due to environmental concerns. Tin-based compositions and high-temperature polymers incorporating a solid lubricant are being explored as alternatives.

In summary, Seadoo crankshaft bearings are designed to handle the heavy loads and high-speed operation within the PWC's engine, ensuring smooth and reliable performance. They are a crucial part of the engine's design, balancing strength, durability, and resistance to wear and corrosion.
